Last night on the way home I listened to a new Linux podcast called TuxRadar and I have to say I’m quite encouraged. The podcast is hosted by a group of guys who (I think) are from Linux Format magazine in the UK. I heard mention of it in a thread over on the Crunchbang forums about a recent review of the distro in LinuxFormat magazine.

I like LF magazine, but the only problem with it is its newsstand price over here. I find it hard to justify paying 15-20 bucks for a magazine (Car and TopGear magazines are the same, very nice, but very pricey). But it’s a pretty damn good magazine. I’ve probably bought 3 or 4 copies over the last year or so and enjoyed each one. But still, it’s a little hefty in the price department.

The podcast itself was good. It’s very..umm.. Lugradio-ish in some ways. And by that I don’t mean the accents, but more the group dynamic. There are several shortish segments to the show and it seems kind of aimed at evoking differing opinions from the various hosts which is a good thing. It’s not yet as free flowing or endearing as Lugradio, but hey it’s only the first episode, I would think that would only come with time.

So kudos to the guys over there for starting up yet another fine podcast to fill my weekday commutes.

I’ve been having a good time lately over on the Crunchbang Linux forums. I’ve been having fun creating various Crunchbang themed wallpapers and such. One idea I had particular fun with was a Crunchbang Ninja. The logo for Crunchbang is a “#!” symbol. So I was (and still am) trying to finding a fun creative way to use it.  I came up with this ninja idea and jotted out a couple of sketches. It then progressed somewhat from there.

You can check out the original posting, a thread with some refinements of the ideas and a cool alternative on the concept by foomandoonian too. You’ll find various wallpaper versions and concepts in those threads as well. Also, there are links to the various svg files in those threads as well. So if you’ve got an idea that builds on this, by all means give it a go.

Here’s kind of how it went: (the very last one I show here was a special request for a Douglas Tartan ninja ;) ).

The other night I put together another video using a bunch of Flip videos I took of my daughter skiing. I’m getting more familiar with Blender now and it took me only about an hour to slice and dice together 9 clips, add start and end titles and some music (The concept of fair use is not dead in my mind if you care to ask). I think Blender has definitely turned into my video editor of choice. Expect more screencasts on this topic.

I give up. I don’t understand the big benefit of offering your customers six or seven different products, each essentially the same but crippled to varying degrees. And the bigger question is whether people will still pony up several hundred dollars for an OS that is supposedly lighter, cleaner and faster.

I’m not sure why I was expecting something even remotely different this time out. I wish them all the success in the world.

Okay. Maybe not so much.
